Following its partnership with SAIC Motor for MG Motor in India, JSW Group is preparing to launch its own automotive brand under the name JSW Motors. The company has already confirmed plans for multiple electrified vehicles, and a new SUV based on Chery’s Jaecoo J5 platform now appears to be part of that strategy.
A heavily camouflaged prototype of the SUV was recently spotted testing near Pune, hinting that JSW is expanding its upcoming lineup with another electrified model.
New SUV Based on the Jaecoo J5 Platform
The Jaecoo J5 was first introduced globally in 2025 and is currently sold in markets such as China and Indonesia. Depending on the market, the SUV is offered with petrol, hybrid, and fully electric powertrains.
The vehicle spotted testing in India is believed to be the electric version, which aligns with JSW Motors’ plan to focus on electrified vehicles.
When launched in India, the model is expected to carry JSW branding instead of the Jaecoo badge.
Design and Features
Globally, the Jaecoo J5 features a modern design with slim LED lighting elements and aerodynamic alloy wheels. The cabin follows a minimalist approach with a large 14.8-inch vertical touchscreen as the centrepiece.
Higher variants offer several premium features, including a panoramic sunroof, ventilated seats, a 540-degree camera system, six airbags, and Level 2 advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS).

Powertrain Options
Internationally, the J5 is available with multiple powertrain options.
The hybrid version uses a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine paired with a battery, producing around 221 bhp and 295 Nm of torque. It sends power to the front wheels and delivers a claimed fuel efficiency of 18.8 km/l.
The electric version is equipped with a 58.9 kWh battery pack, offering an estimated range of around 402 km. It uses a single front-mounted electric motor producing 211 PS and 288 Nm of torque.

JSW Motors’ India Plans
JSW Motors is setting up a new manufacturing facility in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Maharashtra, with production expected to begin in August 2026.
The first vehicle from the brand will reportedly be a plug-in hybrid SUV, followed by battery-electric models. The Jaecoo J5-based electric SUV could join the lineup shortly after, strengthening JSW’s presence in India’s growing hybrid and EV market.
